OCD & Someone You Love - with Clinical Psychologist Dr Nicole Gifford
Most people who say the wrong thing aren’t being cruel. They’re trying to help. But when it comes to supporting someone with OCD, good intentions don’t always translate into helpful responses.
Here are five things worth unlearning.
Telling them it’s not that serious, or to just get over it. Suggesting that their condition is somehow their fault. Offering oversimplified solutions like “just don’t think about it.” Failing to take the time to understand what they’re actually going through. And pulling away, physically or emotionally, because the situation feels too difficult to sit with.
Every one of these responses, however unintentional, can leave someone feeling more isolated than before.
Understanding is not the same as having all the answers. Sometimes it simply means staying present.
Have you ever received one of these responses when you were struggling? Or found yourself saying something similar without realising the impact?
