🧠Effective therapy does not look the same for every person. The goals, pace, and tools that work for one individual may need significant adjustment for another, particularly when neurotype is a factor.
For neurotypical clients, therapy often builds on existing social frameworks: strengthening relationships, improving communication, and developing strategies to manage everyday stress. Progress tends to be benchmarked against broadly shared developmental milestones.
For neurodiverse clients, the approach shifts considerably. The challenges are distinct: navigating social norms that were not designed with neurodiversity in mind, managing feelings of isolation, and working within cognitive and emotional processing styles that standard therapeutic timelines were not built to accommodate. Goals here are calibrated to the individual, not population averages.
Dr Ravi Gill explains that what does not change, regardless of neurotype, is the foundation: empathy, consistent support, and genuine attentiveness to the person in front of you. Adapting the method is not an exception to good practice. It is the definition of it.
