š¤ The myth that a good mother has to do it all alone - with Psychotherapist Sarah Wheatley
Mothers are one of the most publicly judged groups in society. And while that scrutiny is sometimes positive, it far more often reinforces a damaging idea: that the total responsibility for a child rests solely on the mother's shoulders.
Sarah Wheatley, Perinatal Psychotherapist, explores how this pressure plays out, and why it is so hard to shake.
Maternal gatekeeping is one consequence. The feeling that childcare cannot, or should not, be shared. That stepping back, even briefly, means failing. That asking for help is somehow a reflection of inadequacy rather than good sense.
But research tells a different story. When childcare is shared with trusted individuals, outcomes improve. For the baby. For the mother. For everyone involved.
The idea that a mother must act as a martyr to be a good parent is not a truth. It is a narrative. And it is one worth questioning.
You are not less of a mother for letting others in.
Have you ever felt guilty for sharing the load, even when you needed to?
