What actually causes narcissism?
đŸ§ Not everyone with narcissistic traits is simply selfish. For many, it begins with something far more painful: a childhood where worth had to be earned rather than freely given.
Dr Ruth Ann Harpur explains that narcissism typically develops through the interaction of temperament and environment. A naturally sensitive or impulsive disposition, combined with experiences of emotional neglect or deep shame, can lead a person to build a performance-based identity as a way of feeling acceptable.
The result is a defensive structure that is highly hierarchical, consistently seeking to establish superiority, and fundamentally unable to tolerate personal weakness or imperfection.
Entitlement, condescension, and demandingness are often the surface expressions of that internal fragility.
Understanding this does not excuse harm. But it does explain why narcissistic behaviour is both deeply entrenched and, with the right clinical support, addressable.
