🧠The worry tree is a structured triage tool for stuck thoughts. The brain has a natural tendency to fixate on problems it has flagged, and one of the barriers to stepping back is the feeling that stopping would be irresponsible: that staying vigilant is what prevents things from going wrong.
The technique works in three steps.
First: name the worry as specifically as possible. Not "worried about work" but "worried I will not meet this deadline."
Second: ask whether you can do anything about it.
Third: If the answer is no, the task is to redirect your attention rather than continue processing something that cannot change. If the answer is yes, act now or schedule a time to do it.
People often avoid taking action because they cannot guarantee a perfect outcome, or because they are waiting for a complete solution before doing anything. Effective problem solving means identifying concrete steps, taking them, and then accepting that the final outcome still requires waiting.
The worry tree does not remove uncertainty. It separates the uncertainty you can act on from the uncertainty you are carrying needlessly.
