Why healthcare professionals are burning out - with Chartered Psychologist Dr Sanjay Popat
This isn’t a feeling. It’s research.
In a PhD study, 58 junior doctors were asked to keep audio diaries, verbally recording their most stressful and traumatic experiences at work in real time. What emerged was deeply concerning.
Four key sources of stress were identified.
High workload, affecting more than half of the doctors in some weeks.
Understaffing, leading to compromised patient care and feelings of shock and guilt.
Lack of senior support, leaving junior doctors to make complex clinical decisions alone.
And conflict at work, with many reporting being belittled and undermined by colleagues.
The picture these findings paint is not a small one.
Many junior doctors are approaching burnout early in their careers, under conditions that are widely considered unsustainable.
