You don’t need physical injury for birth to leave a mark -with Clinical Psychologist Dr Naomi Gibson
Birth trauma is one of the most misunderstood experiences in maternal health. Many people assume it only applies when something went seriously wrong medically. But that’s not the full picture.
Trauma can be physical. It can be psychological. And it can be both.
A birth can be medically straightforward and still be experienced as traumatic. Losing a sense of control during labour, feeling dismissed by medical professionals, or living through moments of intense fear for yourself or your baby — these experiences matter. They count.
And they can change the way you see yourself and the world around you.
If any of this sounds familiar, you don’t have to carry it alone. Speaking with someone you trust, or working with a qualified therapist, can be a meaningful first step in processing what you’ve been through.
Have you or someone you know ever felt like your birth experience wasn’t taken seriously?
