The silence South Asian men were taught to keep | Dr. Ravi & Dr. Manpreet
The strong silent provider is a cultural trap. Two psychologists on what South Asian men inherit, what they're not allowed to say, and what therapy actually looks like in collectivist families. This week's pairing: Dr Ravi Gill (Chartered Health Psychologist) and Dr Manpreet Dhuffar-Pottiwal (Chartered Counselling Psychologist, founder of MultiGenZen). Two senior clinicians, both researchers, both with lived knowledge of what the South Asian community asks its men to carry. About the speakers Dr Ravi Gill is a Chartered Health Psychologist (BPS) and HCPC- registered practitioner with over fifteen years of clinical experience across NHS and corporate settings. She holds a Professional Doctorate in Health Psychology and has built her research career on cultural identity, female drinking behaviour, and mental health in ethnic minority communities. She works with individuals, couples, and groups on anxiety, depression, trauma, and the long work of personal change. Dr Manpreet Dhuffar-Pottiwal is a Chartered Counselling Psychologist, accredited CBT therapist, and the founder of MultiGenZen, a practice built around culturally competent mental health support for South Asian and multigenerational families. She holds a PhD in Behavioural Addictions and is completing a Professional Doctorate in Counselling Psychology with a research focus on intergenerational trauma. She is a Chartered Member of the British Psychological Society and an advocate for decolonising psychotherapeutic practice. Why showing emotion is so often read as weakness. Why therapy gets coded as a "westernised thing." Why so many men arrive in a clinical room only at a crisis point, and what that delay actually costs. The middle stretch is about inheritance. The two psychologists work through how trauma transmits through family stories, communal history (partition, riots, migration), and the science of epigenetics, where gene expression can shift under chronic stress in ways that raise susceptibility to anxiety and depression in later generations. They also look at how neurodiversity gets masked inside patriarchal family structures: ADHD or executive function differences read as avoidance of "women's work" rather than recognised as clinical pictures. The conversation then moves into multigenerational living. The constant role-switching men do moment to moment (son, husband, father, brother) as they move between rooms in the same house, and the emotional capacity that costs. Both clinicians push back on the direct import of Western therapy language. "Setting boundaries" works in individualist family systems and lands as severance in collectivist ones. The reframe they offer: repair over cut off. The closing third is about redefining masculinity from inside the culture rather than against it. Critical self-reflection on what it means to be a man, aligning with one's own moral code rather than inherited cultural scripts. The "name it to tame it" practice for feelings. Creative, non-shaming tools like the Tree of Life methodology for exploring identity past a trauma-only lens.
