A Canadian Certified Counsellor is a national credential awarded by the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association, requiring a master's degree in counselling, supervised practice, adherence to a code of ethics, and ongoing professional development sustained throughout a counsellor's career.
Filling a gap left by provincial variation
Because counselling regulation in Canada varies considerably by province, with some provinces regulating the profession by statute and others not doing so, the CCC provides a consistent national standard that sits alongside whatever provincial licensing exists in a given area, giving counsellors and their clients a recognisable mark of training regardless of location within Canada.
Widely held, but Canadian only
The credential is widely held by counsellors working in schools, universities, community agencies and private practice right across Canada. It remains, however, a Canadian credential specifically, and does not apply to practice in the UK, where the nearest equivalent standard would be BACP or a comparable UK professional body's registration.
