Clinical Neuropsychologist

A clinical neuropsychologist assesses how brain injury, illness or a neurological condition has affected memory, attention, language and reasoning. Using standardised tests, interviews and information from family, they establish which thinking skills are intact and which have changed, then answer practical questions about work, independent living, finances and driving. Many also provide rehabilitation, building strategies that compensate for the difficulties. In the UK they are practitioner psychologists registered with the HCPC who have completed further specialist training. A full assessment usually takes three to six hours.

Mental health speciality

A clinical neuropsychologist assesses how injury, illness or a neurological condition has changed the way someone thinks: memory, attention, language, planning and reasoning are all tested using standardised measures, alongside interviews with the person and, often, with family who can describe how things have changed day to day.

A full assessment usually runs three to six hours, since these tests need to be thorough enough to separate a genuine change in thinking from ordinary variation, tiredness, or the effect of mood on concentration. The output is not just a diagnosis but a practical picture: which thinking skills are intact, which have changed, and what that means for everyday questions like returning to work, living independently, managing finances or driving safely.

Assessment and rehabilitation together

Many clinical neuropsychologists also provide rehabilitation once assessment is complete, building strategies that work around the difficulties identified rather than expecting them to simply resolve. That might mean structured memory aids, routines that reduce the load on attention, or practical adaptations to a work or home environment.

In the UK, clinical neuropsychologists are practitioner psychologists registered with the Health and Care Professions Council who have gone on to complete further specialist training beyond core clinical psychology, reflecting how technical accurate assessment in this area needs to be.
