Geropsychologist

A geropsychologist specialises in the mental health of older adults. Depression, anxiety and trauma present differently in later life, are frequently mistaken for normal ageing, and often sit alongside physical illness, medication effects, bereavement, reduced independence and cognitive change. The work includes distinguishing depression from early dementia, which is a common and consequential confusion, along with adjustment to loss, chronic pain and caring responsibilities. Older people respond to psychological therapy as well as younger adults do, and are considerably less likely to be offered it.

Mental health speciality

A geropsychologist specialises in the mental health of older adults, a group whose depression, anxiety and trauma often look different from how the same conditions present in younger people, and are frequently written off as an ordinary part of ageing when they are not. Low mood, withdrawal and reduced energy in an older person can be misread as simply getting older, when in fact they are a treatable episode of depression sitting underneath.

Depression, or something else

One of the more consequential parts of this specialty's work is distinguishing depression from early dementia, two conditions that can look remarkably similar in the early stages but call for very different treatment and support. Getting this distinction right matters enormously, since treating a genuine depression can restore a great deal of function, while misreading it as dementia can mean months of unnecessary decline.

Loss, independence and physical health

Later life often brings a concentration of difficult change all at once: bereavement, reduced independence, physical illness, the side effects of new medication, and sometimes new caring responsibilities for a partner. A geropsychologist works with all of this together rather than treating mood in isolation from the physical and social circumstances surrounding it. Evidence consistently shows older people respond to psychological therapy just as well as younger adults do, despite being considerably less likely to be offered it in the first place.
