A Licensed Clinical Social Worker is an American credential held by social workers who are qualified to diagnose and treat mental health conditions entirely independently, without requiring supervision from another clinician for routine practice.
What the credential requires
Reaching LCSW status requires a master's degree in social work, followed by somewhere between two and three thousand hours of supervised clinical practice depending on the specific state, and finally a licensing examination that must be passed before independent practice is permitted. This combination of substantial supervised experience and a formal examination reflects how seriously the credential is regulated within the American system.
A major part of US therapy provision, with no UK transfer
LCSWs deliver a genuinely large share of therapy across the United States, making the credential one of the most common routes into independent clinical practice there. It remains, however, an American and state-issued credential that does not transfer to UK practice in any form. The nearest UK equivalents are registered social workers working in mental health, alongside BACP or UKCP registered therapists more generally.
