A Licensed Mental Health Counselor is an American credential used in states including Florida, New York, Massachusetts and Washington, equivalent in scope to the LPC title used more widely across the rest of the United States.
Training and scope
LMHCs hold a master's degree in mental health counselling, have completed the supervised postgraduate clinical hours required by their state, and are licensed to diagnose and treat mental health conditions entirely independently once fully credentialed. This places the credential firmly among the master's-level, independently practising counselling titles found across the American system.
Naming varies, training does not, and it stays American
As with the other American counselling licences covered here, the title itself varies from state to state rather than the underlying training behind it varying in any substantial way. LMHC is an American credential and does not apply to practice in the UK, where the nearest equivalents are BACP or UKCP registered counsellors and psychotherapists.
