A psychiatric clinical nurse specialist is a senior mental health nurse with advanced training in a defined area such as eating disorders, perinatal mental health, addiction, older adults or psychosis. The role goes beyond direct clinical work with individual patients to carrying responsibility for standards within that specific area more broadly.
A role with responsibilities beyond direct care
This wider responsibility includes advising colleagues on complex cases within the specialism, contributing to service development, and taking part in training and research that shapes how the specialism is practised more widely across a service. In some settings, and in some countries, psychiatric clinical nurse specialists also hold prescribing rights, extending their clinical role further still.
Built on registered mental health nursing
This is an advanced practice role built on top of registered mental health nursing rather than a separate profession in its own right, reflecting years of additional experience and training concentrated in one specific clinical area. In the UK, registration remains with the Nursing and Midwifery Council throughout, the same body that registers mental health nurses more broadly.
